HISTORY
Smt. Kamalini Sarabhai, one of the leading names in the field of mental health services was the key person to develop the pillars of B M Institute and transformed it into one of the pioneering institutions of Asia.
The early activities of B.M.Institute, as an agency interested in conducting research, service and training in preventive social medicine, was reoriented upon the kinds of services which members of our society needed. Research and training components were built around these service functions.

MAJOR SERVICES EXECUTED
Founded by Smt. Nirmala Bakubhai, an active worker in the field of nursery school education with aim to encourage research in to the development of human personality and to study it clinically under the guidance of two eminent people –Louis Murphy, USA and Dr. John Sutherland, London. From its inception clinic served as the main out –patient clinic of the BM institute.
In early 1961, a group of concerned citizens were already aware about the coming rapid changes in traditional pattern families. There was sufficient evidence of the problem arising from the change: family disharmony, desertion, homelessness and at the extreme psychological breakdown. Most of the people working in the field of mental health had accepted that preventive mental health measures must be focused on the family condition.
This school was started in the year 1965 keeping in view of the growing need of services for the mentally retarded children. It had pre-primary and postprimary group. The staff members belong to a multidisciplinary team’s professionals. The basic capacity and the need of child is kept in mind during training at Sharada School.
In this unit, adolescent and adult mentally retarded and psychiatric ill clients get trained and rehabilitated in basic life skills in the pre-vocational and vocational groups. A multi-disciplinary team of professionals and instructors constitute the staff here. Training in some work area and subsequent placement in a job was the goal.
